The rise of the cleaning influencer

The power of influencers has grown significantly over recent years across areas of interest such as beauty, fashion and food. But the influencer who is the hottest topic at the moment is right here in the world of cleaning!

Marie Kondo is a Japanese tidying expert who first experienced success with her book, ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’. She took tidying to a whole new level, teaching people around the world to transform their cluttered homes into spaces which spark joy

The first rule is to throw away everything that isn’t needed or doesn’t spark joy, which may seem a little drastic at first but Kondo suggests adopting a gradual approach by selecting one item that is no longer needed every day to give away or recycle. This helps to avoid hoarding and will free up lots of time which would have normally been spent cleaning and rearranging things to make them fit!

The pictures don’t lie – Marie Kondo’s Instagram profile is full of images of cupboards, drawers and shelves, perfectly arranged by item and colour but without stress and too much effort. The Netflix series, ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’ further celebrates the tidying guru’s success with more tips on how to keep spaces simple using the KonMari Method™.

However, it’s not just about keeping things tidy. Marie Kondo believes that there’s an opportunity to learn from all the things in your life, even those that you throw away. Getting rid of an item you have never used, teaches you that you don’t need that item in your life and will help you to only acquire items with a purpose in the future. Sentimental items can be let go by thanking them for the lesson or experience they have provided and then sprinkling with salt and water (a Japanese purification ritual).

Why not give some of Marie Kondo’s tips a try and see if they spark joy for you and your home?
